Is There Life After Retirement?
Most people are excited about the idea of retiring–finally having your days to yourself and not having to spend your time doing anything for anyone else if you don’t want to. But when the time actually comes, many end up wondering what to do with themselves. Is there life after retirement?
Well, of course there is! The problem is that someone else used to rule your time. Now your time is your own. This means that you need to rule it, you need to take control and make some decisions about what you want to do with yourself. This is a lot more difficult than it may sound. It often helps to try and avoid feeling this for long by making a list of all the things you never had time to do before but always wanted to do. You are not too old now to pursue the things that interested you when you were eighteen, but had to put down at the time to make time for other things.
Were you always interested in painting? Did you want to learn calligraphy, or how to make your own furniture? Did you like to read mystery novels? Did you like to write, or were you really interested in boats? These are all interests you can pursue now that you have the time. No matter how far out there, write all of these ideas down so that you have a list to pull from. It may very well turn out that a lot of these ideas you will pursue for a short time only to realize you don’t like them. That’s OK, now you know! You can move onto something else on the list…it may turn out that your true passion is one of the things you thought silly before.
There are of course other things you can spend your time doing, which should go on a separate list.
For instance, spending time with your friends and family. Or traveling.
It can help to add a little routine to your life, so setting up a weekly/biweekly/monthly game/movie/dinner night with your neighbors, friends, or family can really help add a little bit of social time and routine to your life. You can also sign up for classes in any of your interests to help add some routine and social time to your day.
There is life after retirement, and it’s up to you to get out there and pursue it!

Retiring In Style
What is your style and how are you going to retire into it? I am not talking about money here I am talking about how you are going to go about living the rest of your life. What is your retirement legacy going to be? You can leave an impression or statement about your life no mater your station in the larger scheme of things. What do you want people to say about how you lived out the last third of your life? That’s right – your retirement could be a third of your lifetime. That is a long time and you can do a lot of living in thirty years.
Many people have not really thought carefully about what they want to do with all of the time they will have during retirement. Some believe they will continue to work, some believe they will engage in favorite pass times and some have very specific goals they want to achieve. What is your style? If you have not thought much about this here are some things to get you started:
• Create a brief obituary or statement for your gravestone stating what you want to be remembered for. Just focus on your retirement years for this exercise. There is no right or wrong answer – it is totally up to you to create what you want to create.
• Build your bucket list of one hundred things you want to do before you die. Don’t judge any of your ideas, just write them down. If you really want to do them you will figure out a way to make them happen no matter what your age. My Mom wanted to go up in a hot air balloon and we gave that experience to her for her 90th birthday – don’t ever think you are too old to do something you want to do.
• Develop a list of volunteer activities or charitable groups you want to be associated with. Decide how you want to do that and what it will take to pull it off. Think about the pay-off for you – what will you receive in return for what you engage in? How will your efforts affect the lives of other people and things?
• Who do you want to spend time with? Write that all down and even write what kinds of things you want to be doing with them. What is you plan for making that happen? What role will you need to play to achieve your goals?
These few ideas should be enough to get your creative juices going. Don’t leave your style of living to chance – create the life you want for your retirement years.
